Retinal Diseases Consultations

Dr Akshatha Ranganath is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases such as macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. Known for her calm, compassionate approach, she is now available at our Worcester clinic for private consultations and intravitreal injections.

Macular Oedema

Macular oedema occurs when fluid builds up in the macula – the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. This swelling can cause blurred or distorted sight, making it difficult to read, drive or recognise faces. Dr Ranganath uses advanced imaging to identify the cause of the oedema and tailors treatment using targeted therapies such as anti-VEGF injections or steroid implants to help reduce swelling and improve visual clarity.

Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50. It affects the central part of the retina, gradually reducing the ability to see fine detail. Dr Ranganath provides expert assessment and ongoing management for both dry and wet forms of AMD. For wet AMD, she offers modern anti-VEGF treatments like Eylea, Faricimab and Avastin, designed to slow or halt disease progression and maintain vision for as long as possible.

Diabetic Retinopathy

People living with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy, a condition caused by damage to the small blood vessels in the retina. Left untreated, it can lead to serious vision loss. Dr Ranganath provides comprehensive screening, diagnosis and management for all stages of diabetic eye disease. Treatments may include laser therapy, intraocular injections or specialist monitoring to prevent further deterioration and protect long-term sight.

Retinal Vein Occlusion

A retinal vein occlusion occurs when a vein in the retina becomes blocked, leading to bleeding, swelling and sometimes sudden vision loss. Dr Ranganath uses detailed retinal imaging to assess the extent of the blockage and its effects on the eye. Treatment may involve anti-VEGF or steroid injections to reduce macular swelling and improve circulation, alongside ongoing monitoring to preserve vision and prevent recurrence.

Intravitreal Injections

Intravitreal injections deliver precise doses of medication directly into the eye to treat conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion. Dr Ranganath has performed thousands of these procedures with a calm, reassuring manner that helps patients feel comfortable and confident. The treatment is quick, carried out under local anaesthetic, and designed to minimise discomfort while delivering maximum therapeutic benefit.
