Mohs surgery reconstruction on lower eyelid by oculoplastic surgeon Midlands

Mohs Surgery & Reconstruction

Dr Julia Sen provides highly specialised Mohs micrographic surgery and reconstructive procedures for skin cancers affecting the eyelids, face and surrounding structures. Based in Worcester, she offers combined expertise in ophthalmic and plastic surgery, enabling both tumour removal and reconstruction to be completed by a single surgeon, often on the same day. With more than a decade of experience performing Mohs surgery, Dr Sen is the senior Mohs surgeon for the three counties of Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire. She also works closely with consultant maxillofacial surgeons to manage complex facial cases requiring joint expertise.

What Is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs micrographic surgery is a precise, layer-by-layer technique for removing certain types of skin cancer, including:

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

  • Recurrent or high-risk skin cancers

Each layer of removed tissue is examined under a microscope during the procedure. The process continues until no cancer cells are detected, ensuring complete removal while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. This is particularly important in delicate or functionally important areas on the face.

Why Is Oculoplastic Expertise Important After Mohs?

When skin cancer affects the eyelids or periocular area, reconstruction must preserve essential functions—such as blinking and protecting the eye—while also restoring natural appearance.

As an ophthalmic and oculoplastic reconstructive surgeon, Dr Sen is uniquely placed to perform both the cancer excision and the reconstruction, removing the need for two separate surgeons. In many cases, treatment can be completed in a single day.

When Mohs Surgery Is The Preferred Approach

While conventional excision is effective in many cases, Mohs surgery offers advantages where tissue conservation is critical or where cancer margins are difficult to define.

It allows for:

  • Immediate analysis of the removed tissue

  • Confirmation of clear margins during surgery

  • Maximum preservation of surrounding healthy skin

This approach is particularly suited to areas where removing too much tissue would risk functional or cosmetic impact—such as the eyelids, nose, cheeks and brow.

At your consultation at our Worcester clinic, Dr Sen will explain both conventional excision and Mohs surgery in detail. She will outline the benefits and limitations of each method, taking into account the type of skin cancer, its location and your individual circumstances. This ensures you have all the information you need to make an informed decision about which approach is right for you.
