Skin Cancer: Why Early Intervention Matters

As a Consultant Ophthalmic Plastic, Reconstructive & Cosmetic Surgeon, a large part of my NHS and private practice involves the diagnosis, removal and reconstruction of facial skin cancers particularly those affecting the eyelids. I treat up to 100 cases every year, and each one underscores the importance of early detection and proper management.

I see first-hand the impact skin cancer has; it can be both physically and emotionally distressing, especially when it affects such visible and delicate areas of the face. That’s why reconstructive surgery following excision is more than aesthetics; it’s about preserving function, confidence and quality of life. Many of the cases I treat are directly linked to sun damage, underlining the importance of both prevention and early detection.

As a Consultant Ophthalmic Plastic, Reconstructive & Cosmetic Surgeon, I aim to restore both function and appearance, which is especially crucial when dealing with facial structures. More often than not, I am able to achieve excellent cosmetic outcomes, but spotting the signs early makes all the difference. The sooner a suspicious lesion is assessed and treated, the less extensive the surgery and the better the overall outcome.

Katherine Ryan: Using Her Platform to Raise Awareness

Recently, comedian Katherine Ryan shared her second experience with skin cancer, reminding us all to take sun safety seriously. In March, she revealed on her podcast Telling Everybody Everything that she’d had a melanoma removed from her arm after initially being told it was nothing to worry about. The 41-year-old had also undergone surgery to remove a lump from her thigh after being diagnosed with stage two melanoma in her 20s.

Her story is a valuable lesson in self-advocacy: trusting your instincts, seeking a second opinion and not dismissing skin changes. Melanoma is one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer, and while survival rates are good when caught early it can spread quickly if left untreated. So if something doesn’t feel right get it checked.

The Dark Side of Sun Protection: Toxic Ingredients in Some Sunscreens

Sunscreen is a vital tool in preventing sun damage and skin cancer, but many commercial products contain questionable ingredients, especially some of the cheaper or imported ones you might find online. In fact, The Environmental Working Group found that nearly 80% of more 2,000 sunscreens tested failed to meet basic safety standards (Source: nypost.com). Several concerns have been raised about:

Benzene A known carcinogen, found in some aerosol sunscreens.

Oxybenzone Linked to hormone disruption and banned in parts of the world including Hawaii and Thailand.

Butyloctyl Salicylate (BOS) Associated with irritation and possible reproductive harm.

Undisclosed “fragrance” ingredients These often hide phthalates, which have been found in children’s bodies after using certain sun-care products.

What You Can Do: Choose Wisely, Stay Safe

It’s essential to choose mineral-based sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as these ingredients are generally considered both safe and effective. Avoid aerosol sprays and instead use creams or lotions, which provide better coverage and reduce the risk of inhaling harmful chemicals. Remember to reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating, and combine sun protection with seeking shade, wearing sunglasses, hats and protective clothing to give you the best defence possible.

If you’re worried about a mole or skin lesion, don’t delay seeking medical advice. And while you’re protecting your skin from the sun, be just as mindful about what you’re putting on it.
