A Flawless Self-Tan – Safely & Effectively

We now know that a “healthy tan” from UV exposure is anything but, and that sun damage can be a fast track to premature ageing, pigmentation issues and skin cancer. But that doesn’t mean you have to abandon your golden goddess dreams. Enter: the self-tan.

Done right, a fake tan can deliver a radiant, streak-free glow without the damage. Done wrong… well, we’ve all seen the tell-tale orange ankles and patchy palms. Luckily, you don’t need a professional spray booth or a degree in chemistry to get it right, just a little know-how and prep. Here’s our fool-proof guide to achieving flawless, sunless results.
Step One – Start with a Clean Canvas: Self-tanning on dry, flaky skin is like painting a wall without sanding it first – it clings to the rough bits and goes patchy fast. Use a gentle body scrub or exfoliating mitt 24 hours before application. Pay extra attention to dry areas like elbows, knees, ankles and heels. But don’t go too hard because over-exfoliating can cause irritation, irritated skin and streaks.
Step Two – Moisturise Strategically: You don’t want to slather yourself in body butter right before tanning as it can create a barrier that interferes with the formula. But applying a light moisturiser to dry-prone areas about 30 minutes beforehand can prevent product build-up and give you a more even finish.
Step Three – Choose Your Formula Wisely: Mousse, lotion, spray, drops ... there’s a lot of options out there, so pick one that suits your skin type and experience level. If you're a beginner, mousse formulas tend to be more forgiving and easier to control, while drops can be added to your regular moisturiser for a customisable glow. But here’s the thing, not all are skin-friendly and some cheaper formulas may contain questionable ingredients.
Dihydroxyacetone (DHA): The primary active ingredient in most self-tanners, it reacts with amino acids in the skin's outer layer to produce a tanned appearance. While approved for topical use, it's essential to avoid inhalation or application on mucous membranes.
Parabens: Commonly used as preservatives, these have been identified as hormone disruptors. Opt for paraben-free products when possible .
Fragrances & Dyes: Can cause allergic reactions or sensitivities in some individuals. Choosing products labelled "hypoallergenic" or "designed for sensitive skin" can mitigate this risk.
Beware Of Nasal Tanning Sprays: It’s worth being seriously wary of shortcuts being pushed on social media. Nasal tanning sprays – yes, you inhale through your nose – are making a dangerous comeback on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Marketed as fast-acting bronzing miracles, these unregulated products often contain Melanotan II, a synthetic hormone not approved for cosmetic use in the UK. Side effect listed include nausea, high blood pressure and even a potential melanoma link. Stick to the regulated self-tans that go on your skin, not in your lungs.
Step Four – Application is Everything: Use a tanning mitt for a smooth, streak-free application and to avoid orange palms. Work in sections – legs, arms, torso – using circular motions to blend evenly. Face tanners often come as drops or specially formulated mists. Apply with a clean mitt or makeup brush, and make sure you blend into the hairline, ears and jawline .
Step Five – Drying Time: Wait at least ten minutes before dressing – loose, dark clothing, nothing clingy or white – and avoid sweating or getting wet for at least three hours post-application. Also, be aware of emotional outbursts. A friend of mine watched a sad rom-com a couple of hours after tanning and woke up with white tear streaks down her face. An emotional plotline and a fresh fake tan? Not a winning combo.
Pro Tip – Maintain the Glow: Moisturise daily to prolong your tan and help it fade evenly. When it does start to wear off, repeat your exfoliation routine to gently lift the old colour before starting fresh. And remember, self-tan doesn’t contain SPF, so don’t skip your sun protection during the day.
